We have known for nearly half a century that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can harm an unborn child.
But the rate of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is higher than expected, and could outpace more widely understood disorders such as autism.
But because of the cause, this is a disorder that comes with a high degree of stigma, on top of the huge need for family supports.
